Hirschfeld Employee Wins AISC Student Photo Contest

San Angelo, TX (September 23, 2009) - Hirschfeld Industries is proud to congratulate team member Jennifer Jernigan, winner of the “Interact. Learn. Build.” Student Photo Contest, held in conjunction with AISC’s 1st Annual National Steel Day celebration.

The purpose of the contest, open to any student currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program at an accredited domestic college or university, was to highlight the value of steel construction. Participants were required to submit three photographs which together pictorially demonstrated the combination of structural steel and the theme “Interact. Learn. Build.”

Jennifer has been with Hirschfeld for eight years as an estimator in the Irving, Texas office and is a student at Northlake College.

The top image was Jennifer’s choice for “Interact.”  Taken at Hirschfeld Industries’ main plant in San Angelo, this photo demonstrates two men working together shop welding a large base plate to a column. She states that teamwork is very important with large pieces like this.

The middle image represents “Learn.” and was also taken at Hirschfeld’s main plant. The photo is of a long-time employee teaching the art of layout, which is the transferring of dimensions from prints to a piece of material for fabrication. This is a very precise and important part of the fabrication process.

The bottom image is Jennifer’s entry for “Build.”  The image was taken at Hirschfeld’s Heavy Fab shop in Abilene, Texas and features workers building a 130’ rolled truss for the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts project in Kansas City, Missouri. They shop assemble the truss after building it in three separate parts to ensure it will fit together perfectly in the field.

Jennifer’s winning photographs will be in an upcoming issue of AISC’s Modern Steel Construction magazine.
