2010 Tekla UK Model Competition Winners

For a third time, Consteel’s Ken Clewes and his team were announced as the winners of the Tekla UK Model Competition. Consteel won the 2010 award for best 3D Tekla model in the, “Over 150 Tons” category. Finalists for this competition were chosen by public vote then winners picked by a jury consisting of Building Information Modeling (BIM) experts. Tekla, a model-based software developer headquartered out of Finland, is a large player in the world of state-of-the-art modeling technology used in Architecture, Engineering and Construction. 

The structure Clewes chose to model for this competition is as unique as it is groundbreaking in the world of space travel. Weighing in at 960 Tons, the Spaceport America Terminal Hangar Facility will be the first of its kind commercial spaceport designed by SMPC Architecture, (Albuquerque, New Mexico) and engineered by URS Corporation (Columbus, Ohio) and Foster + Partners (London, England). Owner, New Mexico Spaceport Authority out of Las Cruces, New Mexico awarded this project to General Contractor, Summit West of Albuquerque. 
 
Quietly placed in the landscape outside the town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, the 110,152-square foot facility will serve as Virgin Galactic’s world headquarters. It was designed with the upmost advanced technology for space travel while keeping its impact on the environment minimal. Fabricated in Hirschfeld’s Abilene plant, the rolled roof members mimic the natural rise and fall of the surrounding terrain complementing the natural attributes. Spaceport America is scheduled to be complete by early 2011.
