Steel milestone celebrated at SunTrust Park
CUMBERLAND – The Atlanta Braves celebrated another milestone in the construction of SunTrust Park Monday morning with the placement of the final steel beam at the top of the ballpark.
After it was signed by Braves executives and staffers as well as Cobb government officials, the 33-foot-long beam was hoisted about 150 feet to its position as part of the structural support for the stadium’s canopy.
As part of the “topping out” ceremony for steel, an American flag and a tree were attached to the beam before it was put in place. While the tree used for these ceremonies is normally evergreen, the Braves opted for an ash tree because that’s what the team’s bats are made from, said Marc Dyer, senior project manager for steel fabricator Hirschfeld Industries.
